magic was down to the unerring accuracy and delicacy with which the Chanel couturier, Karl Lagerfeld, gathers a million and more possible fleeting thoughts and references - before alighting on a theme which he then conjures into a spellbinding collection.

millions of tiny pearls, beads and crystals. Softer colours in pale pink and blue were taken from the pastel palette of Marie Laurencin, a French painter and printmaker.
Drop waist Chanel jackets with shiny sashes were paired with wet-look leggings.

Regardless, the handiwork that went into creating the garments (10 million beads were used in this collection alone) and set (a replica of Coco’s Rue Cambon salon) is astounding. Still, there were some elements that we don’t want to see in couture shows — namely pants and pointy flats. Then again, there’s something to be said for making couture at least somewhat wearable, right? Stella Tennant wore the collection’s only truly colorful piece, but it felt out of place among all the pastels. Totally awesome though? Kristen McMenamy as the Chanel bride, closing out the show in a stunning embellished top and feather-adorned skirt and a head full of gorgeous gray hair.
